Environmental Assessment Bulletin 

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Makinsons Area Grenade Range
Proponent: Maritime Forces Atlantic (Reg. 1406)

The project is to include the construction of a grenade range and supporting infrastructure (throwing bays, tower, road and parking lot) at the existing Cambrai range near Makinsons. The entire area to be cleared is less than 0.5 hectares in size. The grenade range is required to meet operational training requirements for the Land Force Atlantic Area. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in the spring of this year.

The undertaking was registered on January 23, 2009; public comments are due by March 3, 2009, and, the minister's decision is due by March 9, 2009. 

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

CBPPL Districts 14 and 15 Five-Year Operating Plan 2009-2013
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited (Reg. 1397)

This undertaking was released from environmental assessment subject to the following conditions:

  • A portion of the proposed harvesting area extends into the Flat Bay Brook study area which is an area of conservation interest under the Parks and Natural Areas System Plan process. Forest harvesting and associated activities are not permitted in the study area and, therefore, the boundary of the operating areas should be amended to reflect this change.
     
  • A 500 metre �no roads� buffer be implemented adjacent to the Flat Bay Brook Study area.
     
  • CBPP is to contact the Parks and Natural Areas Division of this Department prior to operating within one kilometre of protected areas in order to discuss any modified operations that may be necessary and to be notified of any amendments to this current plan.
