Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

5 Wing Goose Bay Supersonic Flight Training

Proponent: Department of National Defence (Reg. 1404)

The Department of National Defence proposes to authorize Supersonic Flight Training at 5 Wing Goose Bay, Labrador. The authorization of supersonic flight training is a means to further enhance the allied training opportunities in the Goose Bay area. This proposal involves the Labrador portion of Goose Bay Air Range CYA-732 from an altitude of 28,000 feet to 5,000 feet and is located generally northwest of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and north of Churchill Falls to the Labrador-Quebec border. The number of supersonic flights in Goose Bay annually is projected to be 1,250 sorties during the flight training season between April to October and would typically include fighter jet aircraft such as the CF-18. The Canadian Forces intends to authorize supersonic flight training as soon as the environmental assessment process is completed.

The undertaking was registered on January 21, 2009; public comments are due by February 25, 2009; and the minister's decision is due by March 6, 2009.   

Newtown Cranberry Farm

Proponent: Beothic Fish Processors Ltd (Reg. 1405)

The proponent proposes to operate a 40 hectare cranberry farm, developed over a five year period. The site is located off Route 320 between Newtown and Lumsden. A new 1.7 kilometre access road will be constructed off route 320. Site work will include; removal of a layer of peat, leveling of beds, ditching, discharge/sediment pond, water control structures, sand beds and installation of drainage tile in beds. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in May 2009.

The undertaking was registered on January 21, 2009; public comments are due by February 25, 2009, and, the minister's decision is due by March 6, 2009.
