New Members Appointed to Board of
Regents
Two new members have been appointed to Memorial
Universitys Board of Regents. The Honourable Darin
King, Minister of Education, announced today that Bill
Matthews has been appointed as a regular member, and
Auburn Warren is appointed as an alumni representative.
Memorial University has an important and unique role to
play in the social and economic development of our
province, said Minister King. As such, I am pleased to
announce today the appointment of two individuals who
will help guide the university in all its future
endeavours. I have every confidence that Mr. Matthews
and Mr. Warren will make an invaluable contribution to
the Board of Regents.
Memorial Universitys Board of Regents is responsible
for the management, administration and the affairs of
the university. It comprises a diverse group of
individuals representing business, social and
educational sectors as well as students.
Minister King noted that that the Board of Regents also
has fiscal responsibility for the university. This year,
the Provincial Government has provided more than $247
million in operating grants under the Department of
Education, representing a $21.1 million increase over
the previous year.
This level of funding is unprecedented, said Minister
King. In fact, investments at Memorial have increased
65 per cent over the past five years. The university is
educating the future leaders of the province those who
will drive our economic and social development. Our
investment is an investment in the future of
Newfoundland and Labrador. With this level of funding
and with a strong team at the helm, Memorial will
continue to build its growing reputation on the
international stage.
