$50,000 Scholarship Program Supports Adult Learners

For the second year in a row, the Provincial Government is recognizing the achievements of adult learners through the Successful Post-Secondary Transition Scholarship program. The Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education, said today that 25 scholarships valued at $2,000 each, are available to recent graduates of Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development (GED), or the Comprehensive Arts and Science (CAS) College Transition program.

"This government has a proud history of supporting our post-secondary students," said Minister Burke. "Our tuition freeze, interest rate reduction on student loans, and up-front grants are evidence of that. These scholarships will help those recent graduates of adult learning programs who are continuing their education at college or university, and will ultimately help them take their place in the provinces labour market."

Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Canadian citizen;
  • Be a permanent resident of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador;
  • Have graduated from ABE, GED or CAS Transition College program since 2006-07; and,
  • Be enrolled in their first-year of a full-time undergraduate program of studies (at least 25 hours per week, eight months or longer) in a public or private post-secondary institution in a program leading to a degree, diploma or certificate.
  • A selection committee comprising Department of Education officials will determine scholarship recipients. Scholarships will be awarded to eligible applicants in each of the geographic regions of the province (Avalon, Eastern, Central, Western and Labrador).

    "Many jobs now require a post-secondary education, and we believe that talent and motivation, rather than financial resources or geography, should govern the pursuit of post-secondary opportunities," said Minister Burke. "These scholarships will provide significant recognition and financial assistance for adult learners in all regions of the province who have persisted in achieving their educational goals and attained a level of academic excellence."
