Ministers Congratulate Winners of Girl Guide Awards

The Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services, and the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs, offered congratulations to 29 members of the provincial chapter of the Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada who received the highest award in Guiding yesterday during an event at the Confederation Building.

"As a long-standing member of the Guiding community, I understand the importance of being involved in an organization that plays such a significant and positive role in the lives of girls," said Minister Burke. "Guiding helps give girls many of the skills they need to navigate their way through the complexities of life though a wide range of activities that help promote confidence and leadership."

The Chief Commissioners Gold Award is the highest award that a youth member can achieve in Guiding. The award is presented to rangers who have demonstrated considerable volunteer work, gained many skills at summer camps and met a number of challenges under the program.

"My sincere congratulations to every young woman honoured here today," said Minister Whalen. "You have all worked hard to build your skills and to make a difference. I have no doubt that many of you will become municipal leaders in your communities."

Members and officials of the provincial Girl Guide movement, families and the Deputy Chief Commissioner of Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada attended the event.

"Your families and your fellow Guiders are thrilled that you have excelled. On behalf of Girl Guides of Canada, I offer you best wishes for the future," said Sharron Callahan, Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada. "I trust that the learning opportunities and the fun and friendships that you have experienced as a girl member will guide you in any adult leadership role that you might choose."

"You have achieved the ultimate award for girls," added Judy Shannahan, Provincial Commissioner of the Newfoundland and Labrador Council. "As we reach 100 years of Guiding in Canada, it is a milestone in your life to be part of an organization that was started by Canada's most forward-thinking women and today sets the stage for promoting girl greatness into the next century of Guiding in Canada. Congratulations recipients!"
