Grand Concourse Authority Benefits From Significant Government Funding

A more pleasurable walking experience awaits those in the metro region after a considerable financial boost to the Grand Concourse Authority from the Provincial Government. The Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Transportation and Works, today presented a cheque in the amount of $150,000 to the authority. The presentation took place on the northeast end of the Virginia River in St. Johns.

"I am delighted to be able to make these funds available to the Grand Concourse Authority once again this year," said Minister Whalen. "The beautiful, safe, well-maintained walkways that weave throughout the capital city region are a testament to the good work carried out by the Grand Concourse Authority."

The Department of Transportation and Works is a member of the Grand Concourse Authority Board of Directors and the donation is a general operating grant.

"As a department, we are honoured to be part of this organization and I hope the relationship continues for years to come, so future generations of pedestrians can enjoy the many green spaces linked by the authority," said Minister Whalen.

"The Grand Concourse Authority has had a significant impact on the quality of life in the entire metro area," said St. Johns East MHA Ed Buckingham. "Over 95 per cent of the Rennies River Trail, arguably the crown jewel of the Grand Concourse, runs through St. John's East. I'm delighted that we are able to support them in their continuing work."

"The Grand Concourse Authority is a non-profit organization that depends on support from all levels of government," said Executive Director Addison Bown. "The Provincial Government has once again stepped up to the plate with funding that will help us continue to enhance to beauty and charm of St. Johns and surrounding areas."
