Government Invests $2 Million on Conception Bay East and Bell Island Area Roads

The Williams Government will infuse $2 million for road enhancements in the Conception Bay East and Bell Island area this construction season.

The Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Transportation and Works, made the announcement today, under the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, which is part of Budget 2008.

This government continues to aggressively upgrade transportation infrastructure throughout the province, said Minister Whalen, MHA for Conception Bay East and Bell Island. It is my hope that residents of Conception Bay East and Bell Island will experience better driving conditions as a result of the investment our government has made in the area.

Road work planned for the Conception Bay East and Bell Island region consists of:

  • Replacing Broad Cove Bridge, Number 2, Healeys Pond, a continuation of 2007 work;
  • Completing the upgrading and resurfacing of Old Broad Cove Road;
  • Upgrading and resurfacing a section of Bennetts Road; and,
  • Upgrading and paving local roads in the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Phillips.

These bridge and road repairs will not only enhance safety for residents in the area, but as we head into the busy tourism season, visitors from other parts of the province and beyond will be treated to better driving conditions, said Minister Whalen.

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program will create an estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the Provincial Governments infrastructure strategy, valued at more than $3 billion. A total of $375 million will be invested in provincial transportation infrastructure improvements, associated expenditures, public buildings and water bombers this year, including $91.8 million in cost-shared agreements.
