Nearly $2 Million Set Aside on Roads in Exploits Area

The Williams Government continues to put into action its Provincial Roads Improvement Program with the investment of $1.85 million for road work in the Exploits region. The Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Transportation and Works, made the announcement today as part of this years $73 million effort to improve the provinces roads.

"This government knows the importance of providing safe, smooth roads for not only residents, but tourists as well," said Minister Whalen. "Thats why we are so steadfast in our commitment to upgrade the transportation network across the province."

Road work planned for the Exploits area includes;

  • Deck repairs, Sir Robert Bond Bridge, Trans Canada Highway;
  • Replace guide rail at Leading Tickles, Cottrell's Cove and Fortune Harbour;
  • Upgrade and pave a section of Route 350, Northern Arm to Point Leamington;
  • Pave and/or resurface 12 local roads at Leading Tickles; and
  • Upgrade and pave Moore's Cove Rd and Southeast Arm Rd, Cottrell's Cove.

Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits, says he welcomes the significant investment in infrastructure for his district. "I know the residents in my district will be pleased with this investment. Safe driving conditions are very important to them and with the increase in tourism activity, these improvements will provide better access to the communities for tourists."

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program will create an estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the Provincial Governments infrastructure strategy, valued at more than $2 billion.
