Significant Road Improvements on the Way for Cape St. Francis Area

The Provincial Governments commitment to upgrading Newfoundland and Labradors transportation network continued today as the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Transportation and Works, announced $1 million for road improvements in the Cape St. Francis area. The funding is part of the $73 million Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"This government is committed to revitalizing roads infrastructure across the province," said Minister Whalen. "To that end, I am delighted to be able to make this funding announcement that will contribute to the further economic development of the region and the safety of the travelling public."

Road work in the Cape St. Francis area includes upgrading and resurfacing Route 20 in Torbay, from Lower Road to Convent Lane, as well as upgrading and resurfacing a section of Route 20-19.

In addition to funding under the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, the Provincial Government will spend $2.5 million this year to begin construction of the Torbay Bypass Road. The project, which is being cost-shared with the Federal Government, is expected to cost $11 million, with $6 million in funding coming from the Provincial Government.

"I am very pleased with this government's announced road work for my district," said Cape St. Francis MHA Jack Byrne. "With the growth that the North East Avalon has experienced, these infrastructure improvements will assist in furthering the area's economic potential, as well as address the resulting traffic congestion."

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program will create an estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the Provincial Governments infrastructure strategy, valued at more than $2 billion.
