One Million Dollars En Route to Port au Port Roads

Driving in the Port au Port area will become a more pleasurable experience this summer, thanks to a $1 million government investment in the regional road network.

The Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Transportation and Works, made the announcement today as part of the unprecedented $73 million Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"The money we are investing in Port au Port will go a long way in addressing various transportation infrastructure needs, creating safer, smoother roads," said Minister Whalen.

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program will create an estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the Provincial Government�s infrastructure strategy, valued at more than $2 billion.

Road work slated for Port au Port is as follows:

  • Replace culvert at Red Brook Route 460;
  • Resurface section of Route 462;
  • Repairs to waterline cuts in Port au Port;
  • Resurface Route 460 from Queen Street to West Street, Stephenville;
  • Resurface Route 463 from Cross Roads to RCMP Detachment; and,
  • Repairs to armour stone, Route 462, Fox Island River.

"This is welcomed news for the residents of the area," said Tony Cornect, MHA for Port au Port. "With the busy tourism season fast-approaching, these projects will enhance the travelling experiences within these communities and contribute to the local economy."
