Torchbearer Opportunities Available for 2010 Winter Olympics

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today encouraged residents to apply and take advantage of the exciting opportunity to become an Olympic torchbearer for the 2010 Winter Games.

The torch relay, which was announced last month, will be the longest in Olympic history and will arrive on November 11, 2009, in Wabush/Labrador City on day 13 of its 106-day Canadian journey. It will travel through 41 communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and include 330 torchbearers from this province.

Information about becoming a torchbearer as well as a complete route of the relay can be found by visiting www.vancouver2010.com.

"This is a wonderful opportunity, not only to showcase our province to the country and the world, but also to become part of an event which unites people in the spirit of the Olympics," said Minster Jackman. "I encourage residents to look into applying to become a torchbearer, or perhaps volunteer with the event when it passes through."

The relay begins in Victoria, British Columbia, on October 30, 2009. It heads to the north moving to the east, then south to Newfoundland and Labrador before a cross-Canada journey west to Vancouver.

Minister Jackman noted the route is designed to reach as many people in the province as possible. The majority of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will be within an hours drive from the flame at some point during its five-day course.

"Although we are on the opposite end of the country, from where the games will take place, Newfoundland and Labrador will have a strong presence not only in this torch relay, but also throughout the games and especially on February 26, 2010, which is Newfoundland and Labrador Day at the 2010 Winter Games," said Minister Jackman.

The 2010 Olympic Torch Relays commercial partners, Coca-Cola and the Royal Bank, have programs inviting members of the public to apply to become torchbearers. Through these programs, Canadians will be invited to share stories about how they plan to make themselves, their community, or their country a better place.
