Three Provincial Girls Volleyball Tournaments to be Held This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will continue its provincial volleyball schedule this coming weekend. Three provincial champions will be declared in Girls 2A Volleyball, Girls 3A Volleyball and Girls Fair Play Volleyball.

Belanger Memorial in Doyles is the host school for the 2A Girls Volleyball event. Eight schools will be heading to the west coast town for the event. Teams will be playing in two divisions of four for the round robin portion with the top two teams from each division advancing to the semi-finals. Division A teams include Gill Memorial (Musgrave Harbour), Belanger Memorial, John Watkins Academy (Hermitage) and Holy Name of Mary Academy (Lawn). Playing in Division B will be Cloud River Academy (Roddickton), Phoenix Academy (Carmanville), King Academy (Harbour Breton) and Main River Academy (Pollards Point). The tournament gets underway 8:30 a.m. Friday and continues throughout the day and into Saturday. The top two teams from each division advance to the playoffs Saturday afternoon, with the top two teams meeting in the finals.

Tricentia Academy in Arnolds Cove is the host school for the Girls 3A Volleyball Provincial Tournament. Eight teams will also be competing in this event. Competing in Division 1 will be the host Tricentia, St. Michael�s High (Bell Island), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island) and St. James High (Port Aux Basques). Facing off in Division 2 will be Random Island Academy, New Word Island Academy (Summerford), Leo Burke Academy (Bishop Falls) and Jens Haven Memorial (Nain). Both courts at Tricentia Academy will be used. Games get underway on both courts at 9:00 a.m. Friday and all round robin games will be played Friday. The top team from each division will get a bye to the semi-finals with the second and third place teams playing off for the other semi-finals. The championship game featuring the semi-final winners will be played at 12 noon.

Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista is the host school for the Girls Fair Play Provincial Volleyball Championships. Eight teams have qualified for the event through their regional playdowns. Division 1 will consist of Discovery Collegiate, Clarenville High, Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican) and Booth Memorial (St. John�s). Division 2 will see action from Corner Brook High, St Mark�s All Grade (Kings Cove), Marystown Central High and Leo Burke Academy (Bishops Falls). All round robin games will be played on Friday using both courts at Discovery Collegiate. The top two teams from each division face off in the semi-finals 10:00 a.m. Saturday to determine which two teams will meet in the 1:30 p.m. Saturday Championship game.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.

R.B.C. has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
