Provincial Historic Commemorations Program Launched

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was at Bishop Feild elementary school in St. Johns today to launch the Provincial Governments new Historic Commemorations Program, which is designed to commemorate aspects of provincial historical and cultural significance.

Minister Jackman said establishment of the $50,000 program was among the objectives outlined in the provinces cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture (2006).

"This program will recognize and raise awareness about aspects of our history and culture which constitute a legacy from our ancestors and a significant portion of our collective identity as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," said Minister Jackman. "This program is unique in that it recognizes not only provincially significant people, places and events, but also aspects of our living heritage including tradition bearers and other facets of Newfoundland and Labradors vibrant and living culture."

Minister Jackman said Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the few provinces in Canada to have a program of this scope, and that todays launch signifies the importance the Provincial Government places on the preservation and celebration of the provinces culture and heritage.

Franoise Enguehard, Chair of the Historic Commemorations Board, said the program will be citizen-led, with nominations being invited from individuals, organizations and school groups.

"The board is looking forward to working with members of the community," said Ms. Enguehard. "Protecting and preserving our provinces cultural heritage is a shared responsibility. This program will help celebrate our diverse identity as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians both now and into the future."

Criteria and guidelines for the Historic Commemorations Program can now be accessed through the departments website at: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/services_programs/commemoration_program.htm, or by calling the Commemorations Office at 709-729-6901.
