Increased Funding Supports Publishers Marketing Efforts

A Newfoundland and Labrador publishers marketing supplement, designed to promote awareness of recently-published local books, has received $17,398 in support through the Provincial Governments Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said the promotional guide is a marketing tool designed to encourage the public to find out more about books published in Newfoundland and Labrador and to purchase them for themselves or for others.

"The Provincial Government has continued to nurture and support the extraordinary writing talent that exists in this province, and the growing publishing industry which helps bring that talent to audiences here and throughout the world," said Minister Jackman. "This particular project is timed to take advantage of the upcoming gift-giving holiday season and to encourage people to consider locally-published books when making their purchases."

The marketing guide will appear in selected media publications over the upcoming weekend, and can also be viewed at: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/Open%20Book%202009.pdf.

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation also supports the publishing through the $200,000 Publishers Assistance Program. CEDP projects are selected based on the strength of the business plans, vision and potential for development within the sector. In 2006, the Provincial Government released its cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador, which committed $17.6 million over three years to cultural initiatives in the province.
