Island Girls and Boys Small Schools Volleyball Tournaments This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador�s volleyball season gets underway this coming weekend. The island representative for the Small Schools Boys and Girls Volleyball will be declared. The Provincial Small Schools Championships will take place in Churchill Falls two weeks later and will feature the island representative and the Labrador entries. Schools involved in small schools events must have a high school population of 40 students or less.

The Island Small Schools Girls Volleyball is being hosted by St. James All Grade, Lark Harbour. Six teams will be competing for the opportunity to represent the island at the provincial tournament. Those teams include the host, St. James, Our Lady of Labrador (West St. Modeste), Sacred Heart School (Conche), Mary Simms All Grade (Main River), Southwest Arm Academy (Little Hearts Ease) and William Gillett School (Charlottetown). The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Friday followed by the first match of the tournament at 9:30. The remaining round robin games will be played throughout Friday and Saturday morning. The top four teams advance to the semi-finals with first place playing the forth place team and second place team playing the third place team. The winners meet in the championship game.

Valmont Academy in King�s Point is the host school for the seven team Island Small Schools Boys Volleyball. The tournament format will see round robin action in two divisions, followed by cross over semi final games and the championship match. The tournament schedule starts 6:30 Thursday and runs throughout Friday. The semi finals will be played at 9:00 and 10:00 Saturday morning with the winners facing off at 12 noon in the championship game. Teams competing in Division A include the host, Valmont Academy, Basque Memorial (Red Bay), William Gillett Academy (Charlottetown) and St. Mark'�s School (Kings Cove). Competing in Division B will be Our Lady of Labrador (West St. Modeste), Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton) and St. James All Grade (Lark Harbour).

The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals. In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

R.B.C. has joined again this year as the major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
