Cruise Association Receives $50,000 to Bolster Marketing Efforts

Close to 100 delegates, including representatives of the adventure/expedition cruise industry, are in Corner Brook this week to attend a three-day Exploration Cruise Forum organized by the Cruise Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (CANAL).

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said the Provincial Government recognizes the value of the growing cruise sector to the provinces economy and, as such, is providing $50,000 to CANAL in 2008 for cruise sector marketing initiatives. This is the second year the province has provided this level of marketing support, having increased funding from $25,000 in 2006.

"It is clear that the cruise ship industry benefits both large and small ports of call throughout Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Jackman. "But we are also aware that many visiting cruise ship passengers, having spent a short time in the province, choose to return to Newfoundland and Labrador for an extended vacation at a later date. An investment in the cruise sector therefore raises awareness of our province as a tourist destination and brings both short-term and long-term benefits."

This weeks Exploration Cruise Forum, which runs until October 30, is designed to provide an opportunity for local delegates to learn more about the cruise industry and the services and experiences expected by clients, to meet directly with cruise ship owners and operators, and to explore opportunities to bring more ships to more ports in the province.

Dennis OKeefe, Chair of the Cruise Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, said the successful organization of events such as the Exploration Cruise Forum is made possible through provincial partnerships.

"The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation plays a key role in the development of Newfoundland and Labradors cruise industry," said Mr. OKeefe. "The funds provided annually to the Cruise Association are vital to our marketing efforts and subsequent cruise tourism growth."

Topics for discussion at the forum over the next three days include: market trends; best practices; competitive competition; and, protecting natural resources. The Exploration Cruise Forum will also provide an opportunity to introduce Newfoundland and Labrador cuisine to visiting delegates and to showcase multiple Newfoundland and Labrador ports as potential cruise ship destinations.
