Five Provincial Tournaments This Weekend

Five School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) champions will be declared this weekend in two different sports. The boys take to the soccer pitch in three locations, while the girls softballers will be involved in two competitions.

St. Lawrence Academy is the host school for the Boys 4A Soccer Provincial. Six teams will compete in a two-division format to determine those teams advancing to the semi-finals. Division Blue will be played at Centennial Field and will consist of Gonzaga High (St. John�s), St. Lawrence Academy, and O�Donel High (Mount Pearl). Memorial Pitch will be the site of the Division White games featuring Corner Brook High, Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s) and Marystown Central High. Games get underway at 9:00 a.m. Friday and continue throughout the day. The six round robin games will be played Friday. The top two teams from each division will advance to the semi-finals, Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the winners of those games playing off at 2:30 p.m.

The SSNL Boys 3A Soccer championships are being hosted by Carbonear Collegiate. Six teams will also compete in this tournament. Playing in Division A at Harbour Grace will be John Burke High (Grand Bank), Holy Trinity High (Torbay) and Templeton Collegiate (Gilliams). Carbonear Collegiate, Mehihek High (Labrador City) and Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) will compete in the B division in Carbonear. Round robin games are set for 9:30, 12:45 and 4:00 Friday at both venues. Semi-final action will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday followed by a 2:30 championship game.

For the first time, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will be sponsoring a seven a side soccer tournament for the smaller 2A schools. Five teams have registered for the SSNL Boys 2A Soccer Championships. Valmont Academy in King�s Point is the host school. Along with the host, St. Joseph�s (Lamaline), Christ the King School (Rushoon), Holy Name of Mary High (Lawn) and Belanger Memorial (Doyles) will be vying for the first ever seven a side title. The tournament will be played in a full round robin format with the first game scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Thursday. Games continue throughout Friday and Saturday morning. The top two teams meet in the championship game at 12:00 noon.

The SSNL Girls 4A Slo Pitch championships are scheduled for Roncalli High in Avondale. The Red Division will consist of Roncalli High, St. Kevin�s High (Goulds), Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Appalachia High (St. Georges). Competition in the Black Division will be Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s), Marystown Central High, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap) and Botwood Collegiate. The tournament gets underway 11:00 a.m. Thursday and Friday. The top two teams from each division meet in the semi-finals 10:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on Saturday followed by the 2:00 p.m. Championship game.

Dunne Academy in St. Mary�s is the site of the eight team SSNL Girls 3A Slo Pitch Championships. Games get underway 1:00 p.m. Thursday with round robin games played Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. The semi-finals are scheduled for 10:30 and 11:45 Saturday morning, followed by a 1:00 p.m. championship game. Battling for top spot in Division A will be Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), E.A. Butler School (McKays) and St. Joseph�s Academy (Lamaline). Playing in Division B will be Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island), Dunne Memorial Academy, Fogo Island Central High and Heritage Collegiate (Lethbridge)

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, is sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.

R.B.C. has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
