National Soccer Championships a Treat for Fans

A total of 20 mens and womens soccer teams from across the country will compete in St. Johns and surrounding areas, beginning today (Wednesday, October 8), for the 2008 Canadian Soccer Associations club championships the BMO Challenge Cup and the Jubilee Trophy.

Opening ceremonies will take place at King George V soccer complex at 6:30 p.m.

"Soccer enthusiasts across Newfoundland and Labrador have been looking forward to these championships," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "Some of the best soccer talent from across the country will be on display over the next few days. We are pleased to support this event, and other organized soccer activities throughout the year."

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation is providing more than $140,000 to support Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association (NLSA) programs and services in this fiscal year. NLSA is one of more than 40 recognized Provincial Sport Organizations which operate, administer and promote activities related to a particular sport in the province.

Doug Redmond, President NLSA, said he expects the province will see about 500 players, coaches and officials participate in the event, along with about 300-500 out-of-province fans.

"This is a very exciting time for Newfoundland and Labrador soccer," said Mr. Redmond. "Fans can expect to see excellent, competitive games and the NLSA, along with the organizing committee, have been working hard to ensure the tournament is a success and that athletes enjoy themselves."

The tournaments run until October 14 and tickets can be purchased from the soccer office and the canteen at King George V Park. Full tournament passes can be purchased for $40. For more information, and a complete schedule, visit www.sport.ca/challengecup2008.
