Travel Trade Show Promotes Atlantic Canada
as a World-Class Vacation Destination

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is attending Atlantic Canada Showcase 2008 in Moncton, New Brunswick, today to help promote Newfoundland and Labrador as a travel destination to tour operators from throughout Canada, the United States and, for the first time, a select group of four tour operators from Europe.

"This is an opportunity for tour operators involved in the North American market to meet face-to-face with our provincial and Atlantic region tourism industry suppliers, who have a diverse range of excellent products to offer," said Minister Jackman. "In Newfoundland and Labrador, we are particularly pleased that this years event will include tour operators from Europe, where we have worked hard to develop recognition of our province as a tourism destination."

The event, which runs through to October 9, brings together representatives of the travel industry who provide packaged tours to clients, and members of the Atlantic Canada tourism industry. It provides Atlantic Canadian tourism operators with an opportunity to market their products to tour operators looking for new and interesting tourism experiences to offer travellers.

At this years event, about 145 Atlantic Canadian travel industry participants, representing 105 companies, will meet buyers from North American and European companies, with the clear objectives of selling the regions tourism products and building relationships with key tour operators.

In addition to the networking opportunities provided at the Atlantic Canada Showcase, participants will take advantage of visits to each of the four Atlantic Provinces.

"Moncton is delighted to be acting as host city for such an important industry event in our region," said Kelly Cain, Chair of Atlantic Canada Showcase 2008. "This major gathering offers North American and European buyers a unique opportunity to truly experience Atlantic Canada first-hand. We look forward to the many new business partnerships and friendships that will evolve over the next couple of days."

"Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the jewels of Canadas east coast, and this venue is our opportunity to promote the province and the region as a must-see destination," said Bruce Sparkes, President of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador. "Our goal is to build and expand relationships with key players in the North American travel industry and win their business."

The Atlantic Canada Showcase is presented by the Atlantic Canada Tourism Partnership (ACTP). Founded in 1991, ACTP delivers fully integrated, research-driven media relations, consumer advertising, and travel trade marketing programs designed to attract leisure travellers to Atlantic Canada from key United States, Western Europe and Japanese markets.

Since its inception in 1994, Atlantic Canada Showcase has been hosted by cities in each of the four Atlantic Provinces. The main goal of the biannual event is to grow Atlantic Canadas tourism industry by increasing travel activity and integrating the region as a travel destination in more North American tour packages. It also encourages Atlantic Canadian tourism businesses to introduce new and unique packages in the marketplace, and provides a venue for encouraging year-round tourism in Atlantic Canada.
