Island Girls 3a Soccer Tournament to be Held This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador kicks off another exciting year of high school sports this weekend. Mobile High School will be hosting the Island Girls 3A Soccer Tournament. The provincial tournament will be held in Happy Valley-Goose Bay later in October. Whenever a provincial tournament is hosted by a Labrador school, an island tournament is needed to determine the island representative. Budgetary restraints do not allow for all teams to travel to Labrador. The tournament this weekend will be a six-team, two-division tournament.

Competition in Division A includes St. Kevins High (Goulds), Gander Collegiate and Stephenville High. Facing off in Division B will be Carbonear Collegiate, St. Lawrence Academy and Mobile High. The first game will be played on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. The remaining round robin games will be played throughout the day on Friday. The top two teams from each division will advance to the playoff round on Saturday at either 9:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. The championship game is scheduled on 3:00 p.m., Saturday.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador is sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal. The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals.

R.B.C. has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
