Province Supports Artistic Efforts of Francophone Community

Newfoundland and Labradors francophone community has received $12,000 to support and promote francophone arts and cultural efforts.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced $10,000 in funding has been provided for the Francophone Federation of Newfoundland and Labrador (FFTNL), and $2,000 in funding to the Association rgional de la cte ouest, through the provinces Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

"The francophone community in Newfoundland and Labrador contributes significantly to our unique cultural diversity," said Minister Jackman. "Both of these organizations promote and foster francophone culture throughout the province while also supporting artistic endeavours."

Minister Jackman said that the funding provided to FFTNL will help offset costs of operating le Reseau Culturel, which assists provincial francophone artists through a wide range of activities, including marketing and professional development initiatives. He noted the funding for Association rgional de la cte ouest will help facilitate a cultural and artistic exchange between francophones on the Port au Port Peninsula and the Magdalene Islands, Qubec.

Xavier Georges, co-ordinator of the French Cultural Network for the FFTNL, said that the organization is pleased with the Provincial Government investment.

"This support aids in ensuring artists of our community have an opportunity to share their work and helps the organization create bridges and interaction between our artists and the provincial, national and international art scenes," said Mr. Georges.

The 2008 Cultural Economic Development Program is providing more than $2.4 million for operational and project support to the arts and heritage sectors.
