Province Provides Support for Performing Arts

The Performing Arts Sector in Newfoundland and Labrador has received an additional $132,200 in operational and project support through the Provincial Governments Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said that the performing arts sector in our province has seen significant growth in recent years.

"Newfoundland and Labrador continues to produce some of the finest actors, musicians and dancers in the world," said Minister Jackman. "The Provincial Governments ongoing investment in the performing arts speaks to the high value we place on arts and culture and the people who bring their creative spirit to audiences both in this province and around the world."

Recent CEDP support for the performing arts sector includes:

  • $75,000 to the Resource Centre for the Arts (RCA) to offset costs associated with its general operations for the 2008-09 year. The RCA is a professional arts organization that encourages and promotes the performing arts in the province and aims to provide an affordable venue for independent theatre artists.
  • $20,000 to Andy Jones Productions to offset costs associated with touring the one-man show, An Evening With Uncle Val, to 18 venues across Canada; and costs associated with product enhancement, distribution, and market access.
  • $20,000 to Neighborhood Dance Works to offset costs associated with its cornerstone event, Festival of New Dance, held earlier this year, and other projects beneficial to the development of contemporary dance in the province.
  • $7,000 to Artistic Fraud to offset costs associated with the development and production of touring materials for the theatrical productions Fear of Flight, Vive La Rose and After Image. The funding will assist with the production of company and show specific brochures, the creation of high quality promotional videos, and website updates, including a private channel Internet access to performances.
  • $5,000 to magician Jeremy Bennett to offset costs associated with the creation of a complete e-marketing tool to market his performances, DVDs, and grow his business. The website will be an online portal that will distribute products to a global audience and offer faster launch-time of advertising campaigns for performances.
  • $3,700 to actor Amy House to offset costs associated with marketing and promotions of her 2008 summer provincial theatre tour of Scratch and Pull.
  • $1,500 to Michelle Bush to offset costs of participating in sound performances in Quebec, including one at the Muse d'art contemporain at the closing of the QuebecTriennial, September 7, 2008.
  • In addition to previously announced support provided to the performing arts sector through the $1.2 million CEDP (Arts) initiative, the Provincial Government also supports the sector with grants to artists and organizations provided through the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC), and through such entities as the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation (NLFDC).
