The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that 228 communities across Newfoundland and Labrador will receive a total of $381,880 to support recreation, sport and active living programs in their communities.

The annual Community Recreation Development Grants program supports general community programming such as recreational sports, summer programs for youth, and physical/active living initiatives for the entire community.

"This program falls perfectly in line with the goals and objectives of the province�s recreation and sport strategy," said Minister Jackman. "The funding will help town councils and recreation committees create and maintain recreation, sport and leisure activities aimed at increasing participation in physical activity among Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

Statistics indicate that this province has some of the highest physical inactivity rates in the country, as well as the highest obesity rates, which translate into a long list of lifestyle-related diseases and disabilities.

"Community-based recreation programs encourage physical activity and healthy living among all ages," said Minister Jackman. "As a government, we are committed to providing new opportunities for our residents to become increasingly active and benefit more fully from the social interaction, personal, and economic well-being that comes with an active, healthy, engaged lifestyle."

Through its $2.4 million recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy, Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), the Provincial Government continues to work with its partners to strengthen programs and services aimed at creating a healthy, vibrant population.
