Grenfell Historic Society Provided Over $27,000

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the Sir Wilfred Grenfell Historical Society has received $27,477 in operational support through the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

Established in 1978, the Grenfell Historical Society is a registered charitable organization with a mandate to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret artifacts and materials relevant to the founding of the Grenfell Mission, its effect on northern communities, and to the life and times of Sir Wilfred Grenfell.

"Dr. Grenfell is an iconic figure in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Jackman. "The work undertaken by the Grenfell Historical Society each year is crucial to the preservation and promotion of his legacy for present and future generations."

The Honourable Trevor Taylor, MHA for The Straits-White Bay North, said the exemplary work of the Grenfell Historical Society is well-known and has been long-recognized in the region. "The Grenfell Historical Society is doing great work to represent our heritage and to celebrate the legacy of a great man," said Minister Taylor. "I am delighted our government is providing the necessary financial support to allow their work to continue."

The 2008 Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP) is providing $1.15 million for operational and project support to the heritage sector, and about $1.2 million to the professional arts sector, for a total of more than $2.3 million.
