Ferryland Heritage Investments Total Over $98,000

Heritage organizations in Ferryland have received a total of $98,524 in operational and community-based project support in 2008 through the heritage component of the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said the Colony of Avalon has received $75,000 in operational support, $8,330 to stabilize the archeological site and revitalize previously excavated areas, as well $5,350 for a 10-week conservation internship that is providing a valuable learning experience, including instruction and mentorship in all areas of archeological conservation.

"As the archeological dig in Ferryland continues, some areas get damaged by weather or become vulnerable and unstable," Minister Jackman said. "This project will reverse these conditions to ensure increased public enjoyment of the site and to ensure its long-term preservation."

The Ferryland Historical Society has, meanwhile, received $9,844 $2,844 in operational support and $7,000 to develop an exhibit focusing on the non-traditional roles of women in the community, told through stories, photographs and artifacts.

Keith Hutchings, MHA for the District of Ferryland, said these investments will benefit the entire region. "The richness and diversity of our culture and heritage along the Southern Shore, and the whole Irish Loop, continue to draw local, national and international tourists to our region," said Mr. Hutchings. "These investments demonstrate government's commitment to ensuring that the people of the region receive the best possible benefits from our rich cultural resources."

The 2008 Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP) is providing $1.15 million for operational and project support to the heritage sector, and about $1.2 million to the professional arts sector, for a total of more than $2.3 million.

CEDP projects are selected based on the strength of the business plans, vision and potential for development within the sector. For more information on the CEDP program and application guidelines, visit: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/services_programs/cedp/heritage/.
