More than $300,000 Invested in Summer Cultural Events

Summer festivals and events are gearing up throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation has so far invested $304,500 to support a number of flagship events throughout the province.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said the funding, allocated through Budget 2008, is part of the departments $2.1 million investment in cultural and heritage projects funded through the departments Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

"These events serve to highlight and celebrate our culture and heritage and the diverse creative talents which bring it to life," Minister Jackman said. "They are also, of course, featured attractions which draw both residents and visitors and support our departments efforts to build on our cultural tourism industry."

The minister noted that Rising Tide Theatre is celebrating its 30th year as a professional theatre company this year and its 15th year of presenting its popular Seasons in the Bight Festival in Trinity.
