Scholarship/Bursary Recipients Announced

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador announced the recipients of scholarships/bursaries during the 17th Annual Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Presentation during a reception at the Holiday Inn in St. Johns on Thursday. Twenty recipients received a scholarship/bursary in the amount of $500 for their contribution to sport during 2007. One recipient received the inaugural Frank Butler Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship/ Bursary Program is designed to provide financial assistance to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches and officials (who are enrolled in a post secondary institution) to help offset the costs of training and competition.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador President, Tom Godden says, "We are delighted with the opportunity to contribute to the development of our athletes and coaches through our Scholarship program. They make significant sacrifices to accomplish what they have and we are only too humbled to be able to provide this assistance to them"

This year for the first time Sport Newfoundland and Labrador is providing the Frank Butler Memorial Scholarship. Frank was the backbone of Memorial Athletics for close to 30 years and his devotion to the development of university sport in Canada and to the growth of the CIS as a governing body helped interuniversity sport experience significant growth and popularity across the country.
