Tourism, Culture and Recreation April 24, 2008 The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador: Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Recognized in House of Assembly Members of Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador were pleased today when Team Newfoundland and Labrador was recognized in the House of Assembly for its outstanding performance and representation of the province at the 2008 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, held in Quebec City earlier this year. The 2008 Provincial Team was composed of 24 athletes, six coaches and five mission staff that competed in the sports of cross-country skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, and snowshoeing. The number of team members, at 35, was up substantially since the last Canada Winter Games in 2004, to which Newfoundland and Labrador sent a team of seven members. The team returned home from the games with seven gold, two silver and four bronze medals. The 2008 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games took place from February 26 to March 1 in Quebec City. These National Games brought together over 800 athletes, coaches and mission staff from throughout the country.
