Minister To Welcome 2008 Tylenol Players Championship to Province

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will be at Mile One Centre in St. Johns this evening, (Wednesday, April 16) to welcome 32 of the worlds best womens and mens curling teams to the 2008 Tylenol Players Championship.

"This tournament, which continues to April 20, will mark the fourth time St. Johns has hosted a Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, and that is in large part due to our passionate curling fans and dedicated volunteers," Minister Jackman said. "I have no doubt players and spectators will thoroughly enjoy what promises to be an entertaining tournament."

The 2008 Tylenol Players Championship is the eighth and final leg of the 2007-08 Capital One Grand Slam Curling series, featuring both a mens and womens draw. The top 16 teams on the Canadian Team Ranking System as of March 17, 2008, automatically qualified to compete in the tournament.

Eugene Trickett, chair of the host committee, and past-president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Curling Association, said it is an exciting time for the sport of curling and the province is pleased to be hosting this major event.

"The successful growth of the World Curling Tour provides even more opportunity for our teams to compete and succeed at an elite level," Mr. Trickett said. "Having this event at Mile One Centre will continue to foster the development of curling at the grassroots level throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

Minister Jackman thanked the Newfoundland and Labrador Curling Association for its hard work in securing and organizing the event.

"Curling enthusiasts from across Newfoundland and Labrador, and other parts of the country, are here to witness an incredible week of world-class curling, including Team Gushue and Team Strong, who will be competing on behalf of this province," Minister Jackman said. "I wish both those teams, and well as the Newfoundlanders and Labradorians playing on other teams, the best of luck. I know people from this province are looking forward to cheering them on."

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation contributed $25,000 to assist in the organization of the event. Tickets can be purchased at the Mile One Centre box office or online at www.admission.com.
