The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Holding Boys 3A Basketball Provincial Tournament This Weekend

Lester Pearson Memorial School in Wesleyville will host the Boys 3A Provincial Basketball championships this coming weekend. The tournament was originally scheduled for March 14 and 15 weekend, but was postponed due to storms. Eight teams had originally qualified for the tournament, however only five will now be competing.

Competing against Lester Pearson Memorial Astros will be Dunne Academy Vikings (St. Mary�s), Elwood Regional High Lakers (Deer Lake), Fatima Academy Royals (St. Brides) and St. James Regional High Saints (Port Aux Basques).

Games get underway Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and continue throughout Friday and into Saturday. A skills competition will take place Friday afternoon, as well. The first place team after round robin play receives a bye, while the second and third place teams play off. The championship game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Saturday.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal, as well a team sportsmanship banner will be awarded. The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.

R.B.C. has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
