Taylor Hits Double Gold at NLSA Indoor Small Bore Provincials

After a three year hiatus the Newfoundland and Labrador Shooting Association hosted the indoor small bore provincials at the High Performance Marksmanship and CSCA Training Facility in St. Johns. Dave Taylor took double gold in Sporting Rifle Prone and 3-P. Mr. Taylor shot 580/600 19X in prone and 1077/1200 33X in 3-P. The X count is the number of inner tens. While Mr. Taylor had a commanding lead over his rivals in prone, he only narrowly edged out Dave Woolridge in the 3-P event by only three points.

Top shot for International Rifle Prone was Brenda Greene of St. Joseph's with 574/600. Team mate Dave Woolridge took top honours in International 3-P with 1094/1200.

Turn out for the match was modest but the quality was high, with four shooters making nine starts and all advancing in classification. These particular competitions represent the marathon of target shooting, with athletes firing hundreds of rounds over nearly six hours of competition.

"Matches are won in prone and lost in standing," said Taylor and his score bears this out. Taylor had a substantial lead on Woolridge after the prone portion. However, that lead nearly evaporated after missing three of the first six standing shots. In the end Woolridges performance was not enough to make the day.

Ms. Greene noted "This competition really opened my eyes to where my strengths and weaknesses lie in the 3-position event. I am happy with my performance in prone. Now I have to dedicate myself to fine tuning my kneeling and standing before going overseas". Greene, along with Woolridge, will be traveling to Germany and the Czech Republic at the end of April to compete in two international competitions.

Taylors comment applied equally to Woolridges 3-P victory in International Rifle, as Greene only had a five point lead after prone. Dave kept his wits during standing out shooting Greene by 20 points.
