Boys Hockey and Girls Basketball Provincial Tournaments to be Held This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador continues its calendar of events this coming weekend as six new provincial high school champions will be crowned.

The Boys 4A Hockey players will head to Bonavista as Discovery Collegiate hosts the 4A Provincial Hockey championships. Six teams are in the running for the title and the coveted Boyle Trophy. Facing off in Division A will be the host, Discovery Collegiate Destroyers, O�Donel High Patriots (Mount Pearl), and Exploits Valley High Eagles (Grand Falls-Windsor) Division B will see action from St. Kevin�s High Mavericks (Goulds), Ascension Collegiate Astros (Bay Roberts), and Bishops College Barons (St. John�s).

Games get underway at 10:30 p.m. on Thursday and continue throughout Thursday and Friday. Quarterfinal games will see the second and third place teams in each division crossing over with the winners playing the 1st place teams in the semi-final Saturday morning. The championship game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

J.M. Olds Collegiate in Twillingate is the host school for the eight team, Boys 3A Hockey Championships. Round robin play in each division kicks off Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Play continues throughout Friday. The top two teams from each division face off in the semi-finals Saturday morning with the winners advancing to the 4:00 p.m. championship game. Teams vying for the title include Laval High (Placentia), Botwood Collegiate, Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony) and the host J. M. Olds Collegiate in Division 1. Playing in Division 2 will be Roncalli High (Port Saunders), Elwood High (Deer Lake), Leo Burke Academy (Bishop�s Falls), and Fogo Island Central High.

The high school girl�s teams are battling for provincial basketball titles this weekend. Four tournaments are taking place involving 34 teams that have advanced to the provincial championships.

Gonzaga High School in St. John�s is the host school for the Girls 4A championships. Ten teams will play in two divisions to determine the champion. Competing in Division A will be Holy Heart of Mary and Bishops College from St. John�s, O�Donel High and Mount Pearl Sr. High from Mount Pearl and Laval High from Placentia. Division B will feature Corner Brook High, Roncalli High from Avondale, St. Kevin�s High from Goulds and Booth Memorial and Gonzaga from St. John�s. Tournament play begins Wednesday, with round robin games Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday morning with the championship game 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The Girls 3A Basketball championships is being hosted by Baltimore High in Ferryland. Eight teams will participate including Mobile High School, Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Stephenville High and Baltimore in Division A and St. Catherine�s Academy (Mount Carmel), St. Lawrence Academy, Gander Collegiate and Menihek High (Labrador City) in Division B. The tournament gets underway Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The top teams advance to the semi-finals Saturday afternoon. The championship game will go at 7:00 p.m.

The Girls 2A Basketball Championships will take place at Lakewood Academy in Glenwood. The tournament gets underway at 3:30 p.m., Thursday at both Lakewood Academy and St. Paul�s School in Gander. The championship game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Teams vying for the

Championship Banner include Lakewood Academy, St. Mary�s All Grade (Mary�s Harbour), Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and MSB Regional High (Middle Arm) in the Gold Division, and Random Island Academy, Dunne Memorial (St. Mary�s), Fitzgerald Academy (English Hr. West) and Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point) in the Blue Division.

Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts is the host school for the Girls Fair Play Basketball Provincials. Eight teams will also compete in this event. Playing at Ascension Collegiate in the Blue division will be Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s), Clarenville High, Corner Brook High, and Ascension Collegiate. Playing at St. Francis Gym, in the Gold Division will be St. Marks School (Kings Cove), Carbonear Collegiate, Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Mobile Central High. Games start at 9:30 a.m. Friday and the round robin action will continue throughout Friday and Saturday morning. Semi-final games take place at Ascension Collegiate at 12 noon and 1:45 p.m. followed by the championship game at 4:00 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal, as well a team sportsmanship banner will be awarded. The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.

R.B.C. has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
