Girls Hockey This Weekend in St. Johns and Demonstration Boys Curling in Gander

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador has two exciting events on its schedule this coming weekend. After much uncertainty, the girls hockey players finally get a chance to show their stuff. The Provincial High School Girls Hockey Championships are being hosted by Booth Memorial in St. Johns. Eight teams from around the province will play in a three division round robin format.

Games get underway Thursday at 1:30 p.m. with two games on tap at Twin Rinks in St. Johns. Competing in Division A will be Booth Memorial, Crescent Collegiate (Blaketown), Roncalli High (Port Saunders) and Baie Verte High. Facing off in Division B will be Holy Heart of Mary (St. Johns), Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Stephenville High and Fogo Island Central High. The round robin games continue through Thursday and Friday. Playoff games are set for Saturday morning with the championship game scheduled for 700 p.m. Saturday evening.

Gander Collegiate is hosting the demonstration sport of curling at the Gander Curling Club. Unfortunately the girls event did not get off the ground. However, six high school boys teams are entered in the event. They will play a two division round robin format with semi and finals, each game being eight ends in length. Playing in division 1 will be Gander Collegiate, Booth Memorial and St. Lawrence Academy. Division B will feature Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Corner Brook High and Eric G. Lambert School (Churchill Falls). Games get underway 9:00 a.m. Friday. The final is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal, as well a team sportsmanship banner will be awarded. The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.
