Minister Joins Heritage Foundation Today is National Heritage Day, a day to celebrate and learn about our past. The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, joined the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (HFNL) and representatives from the heritage community at historic Winterholme in St. Johns this morning to celebrate heritage in this province and announce the winners of the 2008 Heritage Day Poster Contest. Minister Jackman took the opportunity to note the important role heritage plays in our province, as well as the importance of the individuals who work to preserve it. "Celebrating, protecting, preserving and promoting our heritage cannot be successful without the professionals and volunteers who work in the field," the minister said. "There are many people in this province who devote their time and energy to preserving Newfoundland and Labradors rich heritage and ensuring it is protected for future generations." The Heritage Day event highlighted the success of heritage initiatives in Newfoundland and Labrador and recognized the winners of the 2008 Heritage Day Poster Contest. George Chalker, Executive Director of HFNL, said more than 300 students from 30 schools submitted posters for consideration in the contest this year. The winning submission is featured on HFNLs Heritage Day Poster, which promotes Heritage Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. "The quality and quantity of submissions this year was fantastic," Mr. Chalker said. "Participation in the Heritage Poster Contest continues to grow each year as more and more young people are taking advantage of the opportunity to express their pride in the historic places in their communities through research and artistic expression." Garreth Kippenhuck, a Grade 8 student at William Gillett Academy in Charlottetown, Labrador submitted the overall winning poster, entitled Battle Harbour. "His use of colour, interpretation of the landscape, and his poignant statement of significance impressed the judges in a particularly close contest," Mr. Chalker said. For his win, Kippenhuck received a trip to St. Johns to receive his award. In addition, he will receive his original painting framed. All the winners will receive a certificate and a prize package. Poster contest judges were: Margaret Donavan, Tourism Industry Coordinator, City of St. Johns; Janet McDonald, Communications Officer, Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, and Debbie ORielly, Assistant Registrar, HFNL. Garreth Kippenhuck was at Winterholme today to participate in the ceremony and receive his award from Minister Jackman.
