ECMA Honours Presented to Local Industry Leaders

Landwash Music Distribution, based in Newfoundland and Labrador, has won Record Company / Distributor / Indie Label of the Year as part of the 2008 East Coast Music Association Festival and Conference (ECMAs), held February 8-10 in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, attended the ECMAs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and noted the exceptional talent from this province showcased during the three-day festival, conference and awards event.

"Although none of our nominated musicians received an award, artists from Newfoundland and Labrador performed extremely well during the showcases and the gala event Sunday night," Minister Jackman said. "To be nominated in a pool of such talented Atlantic Canadian musicians is an achievement in itself. We recognize also that the ECMAs provide an opportunity for artists to display their talents, network with industry insiders, and attend professional development seminars designed to assist them in the efforts to pursue their careers."

This is the third consecutive year Landwash Music Distribution has won an ECMA award in the Record Company / Distributor / Indie Label of the Year category. Established by Charlotte Story in 1995, the company provides recording artists with a wide network of retail outlets, servicing over 400 music stores, gift shops and specialty stores across Canada. Chris Smith, originally from this province but now based in Nova Scotia, was named an industry award-winner as Photographer of the Year.

Meanwhile, members of The Ducats, a popular Newfoundland and Labrador band for more than 40 years, were presented with a 2008 Stompin Tom Award, sponsored by EMI Music Canada. The awards are presented annually to one individual or group from each of the East Coast Music Associations regions (Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia) to honour those who have made a long-term contribution to the East Coast Music industry.

"The Provincial Government recognizes we have a music community and a music industry that is vital to our cultural, social and economic well-being," Minister Jackman said. "We congratulate Landwash Music Distribution, The Ducats, and all this years nominees from Newfoundland and Labrador, and now look forward to hosting the 2009 ECMAs in Corner Brook."

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is entering into its third year of a long-term cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture which has included, to date, a $17.6 million commitment of new investment into arts and cultural initiatives. Since 2006, the Provincial Government has increased its support for Music Newfoundland and Labrador (Music NL) to $300,000 up from $200,000 - for marketing, touring, professional development and CD production. Musicians are also supported with funding through the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, which has seen its budget more than doubled over the past two years to $1.2 million.
