Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador 2008 Winter Championships

The Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador 2008 Winter Championships are taking place February 9 in Gambo. The Provincial Championships will host over 115 athletes, coaches and mission staff from five different Special Olympics community-based clubs across the province.  Athletes will be competing in the sports of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

"The Town of Gambo stepped up and made these championships a reality. Even though Gambo does not currently have a Special Olympics club they took on the responsibility of hosting these championships to ensure our athletes had the opportunity to compete" says Johnny Byrne, Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador, Executive Director. "Special Olympics provide individuals with an intellectual disability an opportunity to take the spotlight and achieve through sport. Provincial Championships are the pinnacle for the majority of our athletes on many levels so we are thrilled to be able to provide them with that opportunity."
