Another International Travel Guide Recommends
Newfoundland and Labrador as Destination of Choice

Newfoundland and Labrador has been recognized by yet another internationally-respected travel guide as a top destination of choice.

The Fodors travel web site is currently featuring a section entitled "Where Were Going in 08: Seven Places Americans Have Yet to Discover", which includes a recommendation to visit this province.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said this recognition is further evidence that the Provincial Governments increased effort to promote this province to the national and international travel media is paying off.

"The Lonely Planet, Travel and Leisure magazine, The Wall Street Journal and CNN are among the highly-acclaimed travel publications, news outlets, and web sites which have recently discovered our province as a unique travel destination," Minister Jackman said. "The world is discovering our secret, and we are more than happy to share it with them."

Minister Jackman said the Fodors article specifically highlights LAnse aux Meadows, Gros Morne National Park, the icebergs of Twillingate and the jellybean-coloured row houses of St. Johns.

"This mention in Fodors is yet another indication that the eyes of the international travel media are focused on Newfoundland and Labrador," Minister Jackman said. "We have their attention. Our challenge now is to keep the momentum going and continue to attract visitors who are looking for a rare and wonderful travel experience."

The Provincial Government has committed $12 million for tourism marketing in 2008, effectively doubling investment in this area over the past five years. Since 2003, non-resident visitation to Newfoundland and Labrador has increased, on average, by three per cent each year or 15 per cent overall. The tourism industry contributes approximately $840 million annually to the provincial economy.
