Silviculture Activities Reforest 110 Hectares in Port Hope Simpson

Over 290,000 tree seedlings were planted to reforest 110 hectares of land in the Port Hope Simpson area as part of the 2008 silviculture program.

The contract to do this was valued at $60,000 and provided two weeks work for 12 planters.

"Silviculture activities are an important part of our forest management efforts and are implemented to ensure we have a healthy forest resource for future generations," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency.

The tree seedlings are a mixture of black and white spruce, both of which are native species. The seedlings were grown in greenhouses at the Labrador Regional Tree Nursery in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The Provincial Government has increased its investment in silviculture by $1 million this year, for a total budget of $10.4 million.
