Silviculture Activities Benefit Bonavista South

Silviculture-related activities in the Bonavista South area resulted in 335,000 tree seedlings being planted and the site preparation of another 15 hectares as part of this years provincial silviculture program.

"Our government is committed to supporting a sustainable forest industry in the province," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "Silviculture activities assist in the regeneration of our forests and ensure this resource is viable for generations to come."

The two projects are valued at $51,800.

The 335,000 tree seedlings are being planted at four sites in Mile Strait, Spar Pond Junction, Stock Cove and Seal Cove Pond. The seedlings consist primarily of black spruce with lesser amounts of white spruce, Norway spruce, white pine, red pine and eastern larch. All seedlings are grown at the provincial tree nursery in Wooddale.

The site preparation work involves preparing 15 hectares of land in Popes Harbour for future planting. This work will facilitate planting and promote healthy forest growth.

"This announcement is certainly positive news," said the Honourable Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South. "Our government takes the future of our forest industry very seriously and reforestation initiatives are a large part of ensuring a sustainable industry."

The Provincial Government has increased its investment in silviculture by $1 million this year, for a total budget of $10.4 million.
