Natural Resources September 11, 2008 New Forest Roads Provide Access to Timber Resource in Lewisporte Area Ten kilometres of new forest access roads will be constructed in the Lewisporte area off the existing main resource roads used by commercial and domestic operators to gain access to valuable timber stands in this part of the province.
"These projects have a positive impact on the
harvesting and sawmilling operations in Newfoundland and Labrador," said
the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and
Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "This
continued support will also work toward stabilizing the economies of
rural communities in our province." Valued at over $300,000, this work is part of the
annual $4.2-million forest resource roads program. The program provides
construction or upgrade of access roads on Crown land, based on priority
and forest management activities in various parts of the province. The six projects will involve the clearing and
construction of new road extensions on Burnt Bay Lake, Neyles Brook,
Stoneville, Celies Cove, Back Pond and Salmon Pond resource roads. The
installation of a new 12-metre steel bridge will be part of the Burnt
Bay Lake resource road project. These projects are employing 19 people
for five months. "The continued support of the resource roads program
this year is a further example of this governments focus on rural areas
of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte.
"This funding will assist the local economy and provide employment in
the road construction and sawmilling sectors." Budget 2008 allocates $55 million to the forestry
sector this year. - 30 - Media contact: 2008 09 11
