Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune Resource Roads Being Upgraded

The 2008 provincial forest resource roads program will see over six kilometres of construction and maintenance work on two resource roads in the Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune area.

"Our resources roads are an important part of responsible forest management and ensuring harvesting is completed in an environmentally-sound manner," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "With this investment, we are assisting the industry and domestic cutters to access valuable timber and encouraging the continued growth and development of the forest industry in this province."

Valued at $240,000, this work will employ six people and includes the clearing and construction of a new 1.8 kilometre access route off Goodyears resource road and the replacement of an existing bridge. This years work will also see the clearing and construction of approximately two kilometres of new forest road off Swangers Cove resource road.  Another 2.8 kilometres of road will be upgraded.

The investment is being made available under the provinces annual $4.2-million forest resource roads program.

"Improving access to timber for commercial and domestic operators is very important to ensuring the long-term sustainability of our rural economy," said Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune. "I am pleased to see continued investment from the Provincial Government into strengthening the forestry sector."

Budget 2008 provides $55 million for the forestry industry, including $14 million in new funding for diversification initiatives to provide for stability and create growth in the industry.
