New and Improved Forest Access Roads for St. Barbe

This years provincial forest resource roads program will fund over six kilometres of new construction and maintenance work on five resource roads in the St. Barbe area.

"Many communities in this region, and throughout the province, depend on responsible and sustainable forest management to help provide economic stability," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "With this investment, we are providing greater access to this valuable resource and supporting the continued growth and development of the forest industry in this part of the province."

Valued at $180,000, this work will employ six people and includes the clearing and construction of new access routes on Batteau Barrens, Squid Cove, Pittmans Pond and Mount St. Margaret resource roads. A new five-metre bridge will also be added as part of the new Squid Cove resource route.

The East Castor resource road will also see repairs to a six-metre wooden bridge, including the removal and replacement of the bridge decking and installation of a new guard rail.

"This funding will help increase accessibility to our timber resource and provide new economic opportunities for our district," said Wallace Young, MHA for St. Barbe. "The new access routes are an integral part of building environmentally-responsible infrastructure to support our forest industry."

Budget 2008 allocates $55 million for the forest industry, including $14 million in new funding for diversification initiatives to provide for stability and create growth in the industry.
