June 3, 2008Province Provides
Increased Funding for Regional SPCA Chapters
The Provincial Government is continuing its efforts to
improve animal protection in Newfoundland and Labrador by providing
$30,000 in new funding in Budget 2008 to be divided equally among the
six regional chapters of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals (SPCA).
"We originally initiated funding for the SPCA two
years ago with a $50,000 annual grant to the organizations headquarters
in St. Johns," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of
Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and
Agrifoods Agency. "We also recognize the need for, and importance of,
these regional chapters in animal protection in the province and this
year we are providing specific funding for these centres."
The six regional chapters of the SPCA are located at
Burin, Clarenville, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Bay of Islands, and
Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Each chapter will now each receive $5,000.
"This new support for regional chapters further
demonstrates our governments commitment to animal protection throughout
the province," Minister Dunderdale said. "We are taking action in this
years budget to protect animals across the province. We are also
reviewing our Animal Protection Act to ensure it provides the
greatest level of protection possible for our farm animals, pets or any
animal."
