Province Hosting Fire and Emergency Services Training School

Fire and Emergency Services � Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) will host a Fire and Emergency Services Training School in Marystown, October 25 to November 2.

"Training is an essential part of the fire and emergency services throughout Newfoundland and Labrador," said the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services � Newfoundland and Labrador. "This training school has scheduled courses that are of particular interest to local service districts, municipal councillors, and staff and fire department members. It is part of our government�s commitment to bolstering and strengthening fire and emergency services throughout the province."

Fire and Emergency Services Training School will run for nine days with a wide selection of courses ranging from three-hour seminars to the seven-day National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001, Firefighter I; Firefighter II, and certification testing. Applicants will be able to attend as many courses as they wish during the course of the event.

Some of key seminars and courses being offered are sponsored by outside agencies and organizations, such as:

  • Firefighter Safety Seminar by Chris Jones, Deputy Fire Commissioner Manitoba
  • Electrical Safety for Firefighters presented by Newfoundland Hydro
  • Fire Hydrant Operation and Maintenance presented by Department of Environment and Conservation, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Fire Department Administration presented by NL Association of Fire Services
  • Defensive Fire Fighting (Basic) hosted by Grand Bank Fire Department
  • Basic Confine Space Entry and Rescue hosted by Survival and Emergency Response Training (SERT), College of the North Atlantic
  • "Fire and Emergency Services � Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to providing high quality training that meets the needs of the ever-changing fire and emergency management service of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Denine. "The last training school, in Grand Falls-Windsor during the spring of 2008, was an enormous success and we look forward to this event being as well-received. I encourage all municipalities, LSDs and local fire departments to consider taking advantage of this training opportunity."
