Minister Offers Victoria Day Weekend Fire Safety Reminders

The Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services Newfoundland and Labrador reminds residents to make fire safety a priority this holiday weekend.

"Victory Day weekend marks the unofficial start to summer and most Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will take advantage and enjoy a weekend of camping and time at cabins; others will stay close to home and enjoy the happenings right in their own neighbourhoods," said Minister Denine. "Simple fire safety can prevent many tragedies this holiday weekend."

Identify and remember the hazards related to explosive and flammable materials, propane stoves, and outdoor fireplaces, even those designed with fire safety in mind. One second of carelessness can lead to a lifetime of regret. Remember to inspect and clean wood burning appliances, check smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, be careful using portable stoves and heaters, and remember to never use candles in tents.

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should also remember the dangers of carbon monoxide. As a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas, carbon monoxide can be extremely dangerous and can be easily produced by faulty propane appliances and outdoor cooking aides like camping stoves. Remember to properly test and monitor all appliances, especially those that may have not been used since last fall.

"I wish everyone a fun, safe and enjoyable Victoria Day weekend," said Minister Denine. "Let fire safety and common sense be your guide this weekend and throughout the summer season."
