Harbour Grace to Benefit from Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

The federal and provincial governments today announced more than $1.03 million from the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) for the community of Harbour Grace.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); and the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Municipal Affairs in the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The Government of Canadas focus on improved infrastructure for all Canadians means improved services and enhanced quality of life," said Minister MacKay. "Our investment of almost $345,000 through this shared funding program will allow Harbour Grace to install new sewage and waste water systems and extend the communitys access to the municipal water system to ensure a safer, cleaner community."

"Municipalities require reliable and efficient infrastructure and we are pleased to contribute over $486,000 which will support the extension of water and sewer services for residents of Harbour Grace," said Minister Denine. "This is a positive investment with a direct benefit to the community, and supports efforts to modernize infrastructure throughout the province."

The Town of Harbour Grace will expand its water and sewer services to 40 households in the Harvey Street/ Riverhead area of the town. Federal funding is $344,725, with the provincial share at $486,063 and the municipal share at $203,388.

"This project will enable the residents of the area to full access to water and sewer services to the residents," said Harbour Grace Mayor Don Coombs. "Some of the households to be serviced are now on their own water supply, and none of the households are currently on the municipal sewer system."

Mayor Coombs pointed out that the installation of the water mains and sanitary sewer will involve the crossing of South River. The river crossing will be done via lines encased in concrete. Seven fire hydrants will also be installed along the route.

The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada. Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, acting on behalf of communities, helps set the strategic direction of the agreement and identify priorities under the capacity-building component of the agreement.
