Minister Meets with Combined Councils of Labrador Executive

A meeting held with the new leadership of the Combined Councils of Labrador (CCL) is a strong indicator of a positive and productive working relationship, says the Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Labrador Affairs. The January 21 meeting was Minister Hickeys first with the CCL executive since Wabush Mayor Jim Farrell took over as President in November 2007.

"I would describe this two-hour meeting as very positive and productive, filled with open discussion on issues and challenges that Labrador communities face such as municipal infrastructure, energy, resource development, tourism and transportation," said Minister Hickey. "I look forward to further discussions with the CCL leadership on these and other issues as we develop progressive and innovative solutions to the opportunities and challenges faced by people and communities throughout Labrador."

Minister Hickey also provided an update on the Northern Strategic Plan (NSP), which will see the Provincial Government continue the investment of over $250 million during the five-year life of the plan to provide improved infrastructure, programs and services for Labradorians.

Mayor Farrell said he is pleased that Mondays meeting has resulted in a commitment to ongoing dialogue. This pledge by all parties sets a positive tone leading up to the CCLs annual general meeting in March.

"We are optimistic that the CCL will be a strong voice for Labrador in co-operation with the Provincial Government and in partnership with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador," said Mayor Farrell. "We are looking forward to our annual general meeting scheduled for March 13-15 in Port Hope Simpson and hope a good representation of ministers and Provincial Government officials will attend."
