Public Consultations on Human Rights Code Begin

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of International Human Rights Day the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, announced today that public consultations will take place on the Human Rights Code of Newfoundland and Labrador. These consultations will ascertain opinions of individuals and interested groups which will contribute to a revised Human Rights Code for the province.

"The Human Rights Code is one of the most important pieces of the legislation we have in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Marshall. "Our code was introduced in 1969 and I believe the time is right to ensure this document accurately reflects the society we live in and the ideals we hold. The consultation process we are embarking upon will allow the public input and ensure a revised code reflects their views."

"Previously as Minister of Justice and Attorney General I had the opportunity to introduce legislation which removed mandatory retirement from the Human Rights Code. I look forward to our government bringing forth more changes to this legislation in the future," said Minister Marshall. "I encourage everyone to take time and review the discussion document and make a submission or participate in the upcoming public consultation sessions. The Human Rights Code affects each of us and it is critical that we receive a broad scope of opinions and perspectives."

Starting today, a discussion document has been posted on the Provincial Government website. Individuals and groups can make submissions online, as well as via mail and e-mail. The discussion document will be posted until March 31, 2009, which is the deadline for submissions. Public consultations will begin in January and will provide opportunities for presentations by interested groups and individuals. As well, the sessions will provide for general discussion regarding the Human Rights Code.

A list of consultations sessions and times will be released in the near future and will also be published in local newspapers.

The discussion document can be viewed at: www.justice.gov.nl.ca/humanrightsreview.
