"One of the most experienced trial lawyers in Newfoundland and Labrador, Mr. Pike has been both a Crown attorney and defence counsel," said Minister Kennedy. "Throughout his career Mr. Pike has been an advocate for improvement of the administration of justice, and as a member of the recent Task Force on Criminal Justice Efficiencies is familiar with issues facing the justice system."

The Associate Chief Judge performs duties assigned by the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. As well, when the Chief Judge is unable to perform his or her duties or the position becomes vacant, the Associate Chief Judge shall perform these duties.

"Possessing the qualities of sound judgment and a strong work ethic, Mr. Pike has the abilities necessary to be an excellent judge," said Minister Kennedy. "I offer my congratulations to Mr. Pike and I am confident he will bring a wealth of community and legal knowledge to the bench and provide invaluable service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador."

Mr. Pike is a graduate of Memorial University with a bachelor of commerce and the University of British Columbia with an LL.B. He has worked with the Department of Justice and is currently a Director of Benson Myles PLC. Mr. Pike has appeared at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada and in 1996 was appointed a Master of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. Recently, he served as Chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the Canadian Bar Association. On October 6, 2008 Mr. Pike was appointed Queen�s Counsel.

The appointment as Associate Chief Judge is effective November 17, 2008.
