Lewisporte to Develop Marina Business Plan

The Town of Lewisporte is developing a five-year business plan to enhance and market its local marina. The first step, with a $13,500 investment from the Provincial Government, will be to engage a consultant to undertake a comprehensive review of potential opportunities.

"Maritime traffic whether commercial or pleasure craft has always been a focal point to the economy of Lewisporte," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "Developing a sound business plan that builds on existing infrastructure is an important step in generating economic opportunities for the community and region as a whole."

Lewisportes marina is used by local residents, along with boaters from throughout the province, eastern Canada, the United States, and Europe. It is strategically located for travelling along the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador and can accommodate the over-wintering of boats.

"We believe the marina holds considerable potential for growth," said Perry Pond, Town Manager of Lewisporte. "Depending on the size of vessel, we have approximately 140 berths and a waiting list. To fully capitalize on this identified opportunity requires a business plan to identify enhancements and upgrades, to develop a viable expansion strategy and address service gaps."

The town council established the Lewisporte Economic Development Committee in 2007 to implement a strategy focused on supporting economic growth in the community.

"The committee has used the towns historic strengths as a port, its ferry service to Labrador, and marina to sell Lewisporte to the boating market," said Wade Verge, MHA, Lewisporte. "Developing this plan will ensure that the appropriate steps and investments are made. I am pleased that the Provincial Government is able to play such a key role in providing the necessary support to make this happen."

The program is funded by the Provincial Governments Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF). Administered by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, RSDF is a $5-million fund that provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
